Understanding the Key Differences and Benefits

Ever wondered about the difference between breathwork and pranayama? And what’s all this talk about functional breathing? You’re not alone! These practices all revolve around the breath, yet they’re completely different in what they aim to achieve. Each one has the potential to change how you feel in powerful, almost magical ways. So, let’s unpack it all, shall we?

I’m Suzanne, and I’ve been teaching yoga and breathwork for years now, working with people who want to manage stress, find focus, and sometimes, go on a spiritual journey. I’ve seen how these practices can transform lives—and that’s not an exaggeration! Today, I’m diving into functional breathwork, modern breathwork, and pranayama to help you get clear on what they are, where they come from, and which one might be the perfect fit for you.

Functional Breathwork: Your Everyday Superpower

First up, functional breathwork. This is the heart of my Breathe Easy course, and it’s all about using your breath to boost your health and improve daily life. So many of us have fallen into poor breathing habits—think shallow, restricted breathing—that can leave us feeling tired, stressed, and even mess with our digestion and sleep.

Functional breathwork is like a reset button for your breathing. It’s about getting your body back to breathing in the most natural, efficient way possible, using your full lung capacity, balancing oxygen and CO2, and even giving your vagus nerve a nice little nudge (which is amazing for calming your nervous system). This type of breathwork builds a foundation for great health. It’s easy to incorporate, and anyone can do it—no fancy gear required. I’m such a big fan because it brings huge results with just a few small changes.

Modern Breathwork: Emotions, Transformation, and Going Deep

Then there’s modern breathwork—stuff like Conscious Connected Breathwork (CCB) or the Wim Hof Method. These techniques are all over social media, and with good reason. They use rhythmic breathing without pauses, which creates a sense of flow and release that can shift your emotional state in a big way. It’s about tapping into the breath to make quick, powerful changes—whether that’s releasing stress, working through emotional tension, or even bringing on some deep insights.

People often attend workshops or retreats to experience these styles of breathwork, where facilitators guide them safely through it. And let me tell you, it can be intense! Imagine accessing emotions you didn’t even know you were holding onto or reaching altered states of consciousness that bring insights and healing. Some describe it as a natural high, others say it feels similar to psychedelics. Either way, it’s powerful, but you’ll want a trained facilitator if you’re going down this path.

Pranayama: Ancient Practices for Spiritual Growth

And finally, we have pranayama. This one goes way back to ancient yogic traditions, focusing on controlling and expanding your life force energy—known as prana. The word ‘pranayama’ literally means expanding or extending life force, and it involves techniques like breath retention (kumbhaka) and energy locks (bandhas) to help direct prana through the body.

Pranayama is about preparing your mind and body for meditation. It clears out your energy channels (or nadis) so you can dive deeper into your spiritual practice. While modern breathwork might give you a quick shift, pranayama is more about that long-term journey. It helps open your energy channels, so you can settle into meditation, develop spiritually, and expand your consciousness over time.

When and How to Use These Techniques

So, how do you decide which one to use? Here’s a quick breakdown:

  • If you’re looking to improve daily health, reduce stress, or even breathe better during exercise, then functional breathwork is your go-to. It’s practical, easy to learn, and works wonders for keeping your mind and body balanced.
  • For deep emotional release, healing, or if you want to explore altered states, modern breathwork is where it’s at. Just remember, this can be intense, so seek out a reputable facilitator if you’re trying it for the first time.
  • If you’re all about meditation and spiritual growth, pranayama is your jam. It’s about long-term practice, helping you expand your life force energy and prepare your mind for deeper meditation.

In my Breathe Easy course, we focus mostly on functional breathwork, but I do cover a bit of pranayama, too. My goal is to help you retrain your breath for better health, improved focus, and more energy. Whether it’s managing stress, balancing your nervous system, or just giving your body a boost, functional breathwork is such a simple way to transform your daily life.

And the best part? You can do it anywhere, anytime. Once you learn these techniques, you won’t need anyone guiding you. You’ll have the tools to take care of your own wellbeing, which I find so empowering.
